SolaHD General Purpose Transformers provide reliable voltage transformation and electrical isolation for industrial, commercial and institutional power-distribution applications. These energy-efficient, ventilated dry-type transformers are available in 600 Volt Class single-phase and three-phase configurations from 15 kVA through 500 kVA.
General purpose transformers are used when the available source voltage must be changed to match the voltage required by connected equipment or an electrical distribution system. Common applications include motors, lighting, heating equipment, machinery, facility power systems and other inductive or resistive loads.
SolaHD General Purpose Transformers feature a UL Class 220°C insulation system with a 150°C temperature rise under full load. Their terminal-board connections, spacious wiring compartments and accessible panel-enclosure design help simplify installation and field wiring. Applicable models meet DOE 2016 and NRCan 2019 energy-efficiency requirements.
The official SolaHD datasheet includes available catalog numbers, kVA ratings, primary and secondary voltage combinations, dimensions, shipping weights, electrical connections, wiring diagrams and compatible Type 3R weather shields.

SolaHD General Purpose Transformers are ventilated dry-type distribution transformers designed for applications where voltage must be changed to match the requirements of an electrical circuit or connected equipment. They are classified as isolation transformers, providing separate primary and secondary windings for voltage transformation and electrical isolation.
These transformers may be installed close to the connected load, helping reduce the need for long feeder runs. They are commonly used throughout industrial plants, commercial buildings, offices, schools, hospitals, apartment buildings, shopping centers and other facilities requiring dependable electrical distribution.
The SolaHD General Purpose Transformer family includes single-phase and three-phase models covering a broad range of standard kVA ratings. Available ratings vary by voltage configuration and may include:
Not every kVA rating is available with every primary and secondary voltage combination. Confirm the required phase, source voltage, load voltage and connected load before selecting a catalog number.
Standard catalog configurations include a variety of commonly used industrial and commercial voltages, including:
Availability and kVA ranges differ by voltage group. Review the SolaHD selection tables or contact Wallco before ordering.
Standard ventilated models are intended for appropriate indoor installations. Applicable transformers can be used in outdoor NEMA Type 3R applications when equipped with the correct SolaHD weather-shield kit.
The weather shields are ordered separately and must match the transformer catalog number and enclosure size. Do not assume that a standard ventilated transformer is suitable for outdoor installation without the required weather shield.
Correct transformer selection begins with the electrical requirements of the source and connected load. Confirm the following information before choosing a model:
For a single-phase load, calculate the required transformer capacity using:
kVA = Volts × Amps ÷ 1,000
For a three-phase load, calculate the required transformer capacity using:
kVA = Volts × Amps × 1.732 ÷ 1,000
Select a transformer with a nameplate kVA rating equal to or greater than the calculated connected load. Motor loads, future expansion, continuous loading and other application conditions may require additional sizing considerations.
Many three-phase SolaHD General Purpose Transformers include primary voltage taps that allow the installer to compensate for variations in the incoming source voltage. The available tap arrangement depends on the transformer series and voltage configuration.
Voltage taps are intended for installation setup and are not automatic voltage regulators. Connections must be made according to the wiring diagram supplied with the transformer.
Depending on the model and application, SolaHD offers accessories and optional transformer designs that may include:
Standard SolaHD General Purpose Transformers commonly use aluminum coil windings. Copper-wound models are available for selected voltage configurations and ratings. Optional or configured designs may have different certifications, lead times and specifications.
An electrostatic shield may be included on selected models or available as an optional design. Shielding can help reduce the transfer of line-to-ground electrical noise between the primary and secondary circuits.
Do not assume that every catalog number includes an electrostatic shield. Verify the individual model and selection table before ordering.
Selected SolaHD models use enhanced enclosure designs intended to improve handling, access and installation. Depending on the catalog number, features may include:
Applicable models are UL Listed under file E25872 and are designed to meet relevant dry-type transformer requirements. Selected models are also energy-efficiency verified. DOE 2016 and NRCan 2019 compliance varies by model and application, so certifications should be confirmed for the individual catalog number.
Outdoor suitability, enclosure classification, energy-efficiency compliance and optional-design certifications should always be verified before purchase or installation.
A general purpose transformer is a dry-type isolation transformer used to change one standard supply voltage into another voltage required by an electrical circuit or connected load.
The product family includes both single-phase and three-phase models. The transformer phase must match the electrical source and application requirements.
The overall family covers ratings from 15 kVA through 500 kVA. Available ratings vary according to phase and voltage configuration.
Applicable ventilated models may be used in outdoor NEMA Type 3R installations when fitted with the correct optional SolaHD weather shields. Weather shields must be ordered separately.
Standard general purpose models commonly use aluminum windings. Copper-wound versions are available for selected ratings and voltage combinations.
No. A standard general purpose transformer changes voltage but does not convert a single-phase source into three-phase power or a three-phase source into single-phase power for an equivalent three-phase load.
Use the source voltage, load current and phase to calculate the connected kVA, then select a transformer rated for at least that load. Additional capacity may be appropriate for motors, continuous loads or future expansion.
